Scripture Song of Matthew 28:18-20

“All Power Is Given Unto Me”

Commentary on Matthew 28:18-20

by Living Faith Fellowship

To overlook the first few words of this Scripture is to miss what is perhaps the most critical part of "The Great Commission." "All power is given unto me, in heaven and in earth," said Jesus, and on that basis, He commanded: "Go ye therefore..." Jesus did not simply commission his disciples to go out and "spread the word." He instructed them to return to Jerusalem, and wait for His Power to be poured out on them in the Person of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49). When that happened, on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), eleven fearful followers were suddenly transformed into an unstoppable army that carried the Gospel to the four corners of the known world.

As soldiers of the cross, we are engaged in a very real battle with the forces of evil (Eph 6:12). The kind of power we need for this battle cannot be measured in finances, buildings, or even numbers on church membership rolls. The power that Jesus gives us is immeasurably greater, for it can do something no other force in the universe can – it can change a man's heart, and make him a new creature. To be a messenger of Jesus Christ, you need not be a persuasive writer, an eloquent orator or a gifted organizer. You need only be a washed, empty vessel that God can use to carry his transforming power into a sin-darkened world, and shatter that darkness with the light of his salvation.
