"I Am The Bread Of Life..."

John 6:35

  1. ...I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Commentary

Out of all the miracles Jesus performed, it is interesting to note which one provoked the most excitement among the masses. They were amazed when He cast out demons, opened the eyes of the blind, and raised the dead - but when He multiplied the loaves, they decided to crown Him king by force (John 6:14-15). Finding Him gone before they could do this, they followed Him across the lake, and all but suggested a repeat performance of the miracle (John 6:30-6:31).

This fixation on temporal needs and blessings is typical of the human heart. We get focused on the fishes and loaves of earthly prosperity, and start seeking those things from God, instead of seeking God Himself (John 6:26-27). Our Father loves us too much to simply grant all these lesser temporal wants. Instead He offers us Jesus Christ, the Living Bread, who came down from heaven to save a perishing world. This eternal Gift fulfills every real need and desire we have, both for this life and the next.

Any earthly meal, no matter how lavish, will soon leave us hungry again - a fact eventually discovered by all who spend their lives chasing the things of the world. But when we come to Jesus, and believe on Him, we will find the deepest hunger of our souls permanently satisfied with the Living Bread, broken for us on Calvary.
