"Ye Men Of Galilee..."

Acts 1:11

  1. ...Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Commentary

As Jesus led his disciples out to the mountain where He would ascend, they asked Him one last time a question that had been on their minds from the very start: When does the kingdom come? (Acts 1:6). They wanted to see things made right - right then, in their lifetimes. Like the disciples, we live in a world full of wrong that only seems to get worse every day. When facing our most difficult trials, we ask that same question: When is your kingdom coming? Why not now? How much worse must things get before the end?

The Lord's answer to us is the same as it was to them. We do not, cannot, and need not know the why and when of the Father's master plan (Acts 1:7-8). We need only follow his commands as faithful servants - every day that He gives us, by the grace that He gives us, and in the power of his Holy Spirit. Jesus may return next week, or next month, or in fifty years, but one glorious thing is sure: He will return someday. Our job is simply to live every day as if we knew that this would be the one.
