"Fear Ye Not, Stand Still..."

Ex. 14:13-14

  1. ... Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: ...
  2. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

Commentary

It has been truly said that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." The long-enslaved Israelites had at last been released from their bondage in Egypt, only to be pursued and hopelessly trapped by Pharaoh and his powerful army. Where was God in this situation? He was right there with his people, preparing to work one of the most spectacular miracles in human history - the parting of the Red Sea. It would have been natural, if almost certainly futile, for the Israelites in this predicament to try to run or fight. But through Moses, God instructed them to do the hardest thing of all - stand still in faith, and let the Lord fight the battle.

Each of us is likely to find ourselves in this sort of situation at some point in our life. It is then that we must remember not to fight for ourselves, but to be still and trust in the Lord, if we would see him work mightily on our behalf.
