Most people are familiar with the story of the ten lepers who were healed by Jesus in Samaria. These individuals were suffering from a disease for which no cure existed, living in isolation under a death sentence. No situation could have been more hopelessly gloomy than theirs - yet with just six words, the Lord of all creation turned their night to day. "Go, show yourselves to the priests," Jesus said. All obeyed, and all were healed at once - but only one returned to give God glory (Luke 17:17-18).
"Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing," David wrote, "...to the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent" (Psa. 30:11-12). When we realize that we have no claim on God's blessings, and that we, like the ten lepers Jesus healed, are simply objects of his mercy and grace, an overflowing of praise to Him is the natural and right response. This praise, in turn, makes more room in our lives for God's power to be displayed (2 Chr. 20:22). We should not miss out on anything God wants to give us by failing to give him "the glory due unto his name" (Psa. 29:2). May we instead take every opportunity to praise the one who took the sackcloth of our sin, and girded us with the joy of his salvation.
