"Trust Ye In The Lord Forever..."

Isa. 26:4

  1. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

Commentary

With just 14 words, Trust Ye In The Lord Forever is among the shortest Scripture songs of our collection, but its simple message is a recurring theme in God's Word. Over and over again, we are told that we must simply trust God: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding" (Prov. 3:5); "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man (Psa. 118:8); "Blessed is the man that maketh the Lord his trust" (Psa. 40:4).

Man fell in the first place because Adam and Eve did not trust God - instead, they believed Satan when he suggested that the Creator was holding out on them (Gen. 3:4-5). The children of Israel died in the wilderness because they did not trust God (Heb. 3:19) despite the many times his powerful care for them had been demonstrated. To the last, they remained suspicious that He planned to forsake them (Num. 14:3).

The Bible tells us that we are to be instructed by the lives of those who have gone before (1 Cor. 10:11). The ones who did not believe serve as negative examples, but we also find many inspiring accounts of those who trusted in God, and saw Him move mightily on their behalf (read Hebrews 11). Our ultimate Example, Jesus Christ, trusted the Father in a way few can understand. His trust in God was accompanied, as ours should be, by a realistic attitude toward frail humanity (John 2:24-25).

To trust in ourselves and in other mortals is natural, but foolish. Only God has "everlasting strength."
