"Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled..."

John 14:1-3

  1. Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
  2. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
  3. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Commentary

The Apostle John records these words of Jesus, spoken to his disciples in the final hours before his betrayal, arrest and crucifixion. Though He knew the pain and agony that awaited Him, his thoughts, as always, were not of Himself, but of those whom the Father had entrusted to his care. Understanding the human heart, and knowing the time of doubt and despair the disciples were about to face, He gave them the wonderful reassurance of this promise.

Throughout the centuries since Jesus' death and resurrection, generations of believers have found comfort in these words to sustain them through the darkest of trials. No matter what we are called upon to endure in this life, we are promised an everlasting home in Heaven, personally prepared by the One who gave everything for us. Like the pains of childbirth, which are soon forgotten by the mother for the joy of the child received (John 16:21), the suffering and tribulation of this world will quickly fade away in the light of that “exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor. 4:17).
