In the 39th Psalm, David muses on the vanity and brevity of earthly existence, and confesses that his only hope is in God. The inescapable fact of death ought to cause every unredeemed soul to question, as Solomon did in Ecclesiastes, the purpose of his existence. Sadly, most of the world rushes madly down the broad path that leads to destruction, determined either to distract themselves from their own mortality, or to deny the existence of the eternal soul within.
We who know the truth ought not to be found among those who store up treasures in this life, as though we could take our accumulated wealth or influence with us to the grave. Instead, we ought always to be watching and waiting as our Lord commanded, shining the light He has given us into the darkness of our world (Luke 12:35-37).
