Most of us have at least witnessed, if not participated in, a concert or sports event where the crowd "went wild" over the performance of some celebrity or football team. Such expressions of excitement are considered perfectly natural and acceptable, so why should we, as children of the King of all the universe, who have the greatest news ever published, sit down and be quiet? David himself publicly danced and praised the Lord without regard to his earthly audience, earning the contempt of his wife Michal, who thought it was beneath his kingly dignity (2 Sa. 6:16). God showed, however, which of their attitudes was more pleasing to Him (2 Sa. 6:23, Acts 13:22).
We ought to remember that it is the heart of humble adoration in which God delights, a heart that thinks only of pleasing Him, and not of what others may think of us. Pew-thumping rhythms and fleshly gyrations please Him no more than the pump-organ hymns we sing while thinking about our next golf excursion. We must praise as we worship, in spirit, in truth, and in the beauty of holiness (John 4:23, 1 Ch. 16:29).
