"Our Father Which Art in Heaven..."

Matt. 6:9-13

  1. ...Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
  2. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
  3. Give us this day our daily bread.
  4. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
  5. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Commentary

For the last 75 years, Christians throughout the English-speaking world have enjoyed the beautiful musical setting of The Lord's Prayer by Alfred Hay Malotte. While this majestic and reverent composition is unrivaled for solo performance, we feel that the Lord gave us the melody presented here to fill a different need, that of congregational singing.

Theologians through the centuries have labored to expound the deep truths contained in this simple prayer; many volumes have been written on the subject, and doubtless revelations will yet be found in it for many more. In its very simplicity, though, there is an important lesson: Our Father delights not so much in our eloquent requests, but in the childlike heart which asks for daily needs, yet trusts Him enough to say "Thy will be done in earth as it is in Heaven."
